BCCI recently conducted and concluded the 13th season of IPL 2020 in UAE. It was a big challenge to run the whole IPL 2020 overseas, but it went pretty smooth, but again there lies ahead a more significant challenge to run IPL 14th edition.

This year, there could be some vital changes, such as expanding foreign/overseas players from 4 to 5 in a team, as more overseas players will increase the competition and thrill too.

For those wondering what mega-auction in IPL meant?

The mega auction is the auction when all the players are put under the hammer [all the teams will get chance to choose their new squad].

A team can only retain three players in an auction, and they can keep two more players using the Right-To-Match (RTM) options.

Interestingly, BCCI was thinking of conducting a mega auction for IPL 2021, but there will be no mega auction for IPL 14th season due to shortage of time.

The franchises were divided over the mega-auction.

Teams like CSK, RCB are in support; they desperately need mega-auction to build a better team.

On the other hand, squads like Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, who have made a comparatively stronger team, oppose this mega-auction in the risk of losing their strong group.

Rules for IPL Auction 2021

  • The squad strength must be between 18 and 25 players, with a maximum of 8 overseas players for each team.
  • A team can play a maximum number of 4 overseas players in their playing eleven for IPL 2021.
  • No Under-19 player can be picked unless they have played first-class or List A cricket earlier.
  • The salary cap of the entire squad must not exceed ₹87 crores (US$12 million).
